The Leap Residence

Smaller Homes

Objectives:

Preserve the interior character of the rustic two-bedroom home built in 1926 while improving the home’s exterior. The whole house remodel should address the cramped living area and kitchen. Add a powder room, incorporating an antique stained-glass window into the design. Expand the master bedroom, creating a sitting area; expand the master bath, and provide more closet storage. Remodel the second bedroom, including the bathroom and closets. Construct a large wine cellar for the client’s wine collection.

Outcome:

The home’s exterior plaster was replaced with stone veneer, mission tile with rafter tails were added to the roof, and stained-wood French doors were installed. Interior walls were removed to open up the kitchen to the living area, and a large island to separate the areas was added. Base cabinets with doors were installed to conceal the washer and dryer. A powder room wing with an arched, antique stained-glass window was added to the home, and a balcony was constructed between the powder room and kitchen wings.

The master bedroom was expanded, and a sitting area was created; a see-through fireplace that served both the master bedroom and bathroom was built, and more closet space was provided. The master bath was remodeled and expanded to include a large shower with a seat, a tub facing the fireplace, double sinks, and a skylight above. A wine cellar was created by excavating an area below the raised entry stairs.
