The San Remo Residence

Additions and Remodels

Objectives:

Originally designed by architect Cliff May, the house is surrounded by a steep hillside and has a very small back yard. Add two bedrooms replete with bathrooms and closets, a study, screening room with a projection booth, refreshment kitchen, bathroom, and wine cellar. Build a guest house with two one-bedroom suites, a game room, and a sitting area; remodel an accessory structure, creating an office, painting and craft studio, and gym. Significantly expand the backyard space.

Outcome:

A new wing was added that stepped down the hill. The bathroom and closet were reconfigured for the guest bedroom and laundry to create a hallway to the new bedroom wing. Two bedrooms suites with views overlooking the hillside with access to a large deck were designed. With a skylight above, a stairway leading to the basement was constructed. A study with a view, screening room with a projection booth, refreshment kitchen, wine cellar, and bathroom were constructed on the basement level; an expansion of the deck served as the roof to the screening room.

A 38 by 150-foot structure was created and covered with 18 inches of earth and grass to expand the backyard, while a 4,000 square foot guest house was constructed to take advantage of the large space below the earth-covered deck. A new pathway leading down the hill grants access to the newly built guest house, which includes two one-bedroom suites with a sitting room between them, a craft room, a playroom, and a game room. The existing accessory structure was remodeled, creating an office, art studio, and a gym located on the lower level. An additional 2,542 square feet were added to the home’s original 6,910 square feet.
